Arose in the Dark
By Joseph McGowan
The sun has yet to kiss the night sky good morning
But just like the sun, she begins to rise
And brush the sleep from her eyes as she stumbles to the bathroom, yawning
She’s alone in her early morning routine
Same way every day, time to dress and time to clean
Though the only one yet awakened
She thinks of her little boy and her loving man
Who the sand man had cast his spell and taken
Still dreaming of things to come
Still dreaming at peace as one
She takes the time just to check and see them sleep
And the sight of her little boy at rest makes her morning complete
Now, some men measure strength by how much weight they can lift
And some send their love in the form of a gift
But I see the inner strength that you possess
The kind of strength that rises from your soul
In the early morning to get you dressed
Now, I see the love though not in the form of a gift
The love called dedication to your family with each day from the bed you do lift
Lift your tired soul so we may all have a better home
And we will some day look back at a mom who worked so hard
To praise her for each day she rose in the dark to get dressed all alone
