Love, Treasure of the Human Spirit
By Joseph McGowan
Men have searched this vast earth for treasures they would sell or cherish.
They’ve crossed desert sands, climbed mountain peaks
And under deep blue seas many a man has perished.
Through ancient ruins they have searched and through time have blazed a trail
Only to come up short of what they were truly looking for,
Instead they searched for a man-made holy grail.
For, fallen idols buried deep in hot desert sands
Or rubies, diamond and emeralds that lay beneath the soil
Are only objects you can hold in your hands, still in a futile attempt they toil.
For the true treasures in life you won’t find buried beneath desert sand
On mountain peaks or under waters that run so deep
Nor can you hold them in your hand.
They are the way we touch, or if spoken you can hear it
They are the way we look into each others’ eyes
This treasure called “love” that resides in the human spirit.
It’s in the way we unite and reach out our hands
When another has fallen by the wayside
To mend their wounds, to make them well again and restore their faith in mankind.
This treasure lies inside all of us, flying free like a snow white dove
So take my hand and walk by my side
And together we will share this gift called “love.”
