Matthew
By Joseph McGowan
The time has come as it did for me, and it will for everyone
To look back over your shoulder on another setting sun
Of days gone by, for forever a day cannot last.
The time has come to, as a young man, say good-bye
But not forever to a childhood past.
But not to worry,
See, you never say good-bye to a child that in each of us runs free,
For he walks with you every day, waiting patiently to play with you
Like an old friend from a distant memory.
And for a moment he lets you see into your past and it’s just like old times
Remembering to be a child again when you first learn to ride a bike, throw a ball
And when mom softly read you to sleep with nursery rhymes.
See, the time has come for growing strong and time to make some plans
For the years ahead are what forge your soul and shape your body into a man’s.
It’s time for making choices not to follow, but to lead
And you’ll see the road less travelled is always the toughest.
It will make you sweat and it will make you bleed.
But that’s why few take it, my friend, and even fewer succeed.
But once you’ve made your choice, you gain respect as you see it through to the end
You’ll be glad you did and as I shake your hand, I’ll say today, “You’re a man, my friend.”
