Sweet Dreams

By Joseph McGowan

Her voice so softly just whispered, “Sweet Dreams,” as we said good night.
And as I lay me down to sleep, I wish to dream of her tonight.
For you lovers must sleep, again alone tonight.

The night grows old, and the body weak as sleep does close my eyes.
Dreams come forth and fill my mind of rainbows in the sky.
Across this subconscious realm, I search for her
Across the sands of time.

Through the darkness I now seek as everything is strange
Snakes and spiders at my feet, now in the bond of fear, I am chained.
I run but cannot get away yet I am void of pain.

Suddenly you appear as I stand in a field of clover
Peace has come into my mind.  The fear is finally over.
You’ve come to me to share the night.
You’ve finally come to me, my lover.

I’ve made the journey many nights not knowing what I’d find.
I’ve opened the doors of a thousand dreams in my endless mind.
As all have done, and will do ‘til the end of time.
