The Fighter
By Joseph McGowan
Determined, the fighter gets up in the early morning
Each and every day to answer the bell.
For he knows his tasks are now at hand.
And again he enters the ring he knows all too well.
Throughout the years and through countless rounds
He has risen to meet his opponent in every bout.
Though the underdog in many a fight
He always seems to muster the will to succeed
And push aside any doubt.
His body tells the story of the fighter
Who rose to the challenge in every battle he has ever fought.
For, throughout his life he has learned how to overcome the odds
And to whomever he has met these lessons he has willingly taught.
In his corner he has family and he has his friends
They’ve stood by his side ‘til all is healed and ‘til all pain ends
And there will come a time when they will watch and to all they will tell
Of the come back the fighter made
When he once again got up to answer life’s bell.
And when that fight is over and all is said and done
Standing tall once again will be the fighter,
Who’s legacy will live on, long after life’s last bell has rung.
