The Legends
By Joseph McGowan
You heard the story of the Mighty Casey at bat,
And the legends of Mantle, Aaron and Ruth.
Well, if you’re still in need of something to read,
Here’s the story of the La Sierra Red Sox
And you have my word it is the truth.
They came to play on a bright spring day,
Unpolished, rusty and raw.
But I remember the coach to say
They have the potential to be a great team some day
And as I watched them practice I began to see what he saw.
And as the season progressed, blood was bled
And tears were shed and I think there was a black eye or two,
But that’s the price you pay to be a legend one day.
And believe me these kids will be remembered
Long after the season is through.
For they fought in each game
And each game there was a new hero with a new name.
As each player stepped up to do their part
And you can take my word may times I heard
These kids play with all their heart.
Yet when the tourney came ‘round
I had to go out of town
So the rest is of legend and lore
And when the first game was done
They were beat by just one run
As eight to seven was the score.
And in the championship game
They played just the same
As a team who had come a long way
And I, remembering, telling them one day
They’ll be legends some day
And every one will remember their name
And although they had lost
They now know what it cost
For hard work and dedication is the price you pay
So when you put on your uniform
And this is the truth
You walk in the footsteps of Mantle, Aaron and Ruth
And you are all winners and legends today.
